At the YMCA of Greater Cleveland, our Youth Development team is guided by the Positive Youth Development (PYD) approach, a strengths-based philosophy that focuses on helping young people grow into confident, capable and caring adults. Rather than concentrating only on preventing problems, PYD builds on each child’s unique talents and potential, supporting their growth physically, emotionally, socially and academically.
Central to PYD are the “Five Cs”: competence, confidence, connection, character and caring — qualities that research shows help youth thrive. In our programs, this means creating safe and inclusive environments, fostering strong relationships with mentors and peers, and giving young people meaningful opportunities to lead, serve and contribute. Whether through afterschool programs, sports, mentoring or leadership opportunities, we are intentional about helping every young person develop the skills and sense of belonging they need to reach their full potential.
When families choose the Y, they’re choosing more than a program, they’re choosing an approach rooted in empowerment, resilience and well-being.
