Y on the Fly van out in the community

Imagine the YMCA arriving right in a neighborhood, bringing games, healthy snacks, learning opportunities and lots of fun for kids and families. That’s exactly what our Y on the Fly program does.

The YMCA of Greater Cleveland operates two Y on the Fly vans that travel to neighborhoods across the community, prioritizing areas where the needs are greater, delivering enrichment activities and wellness programming directly to children and families. Designed as a “Y without walls,” this mobile initiative helps ensure that young people can grow in spirit, mind and body even if they do not live near a YMCA branch.

Y on the Fly is completely free and no registration is required. Children can simply stop by and participate in the activities when the van arrives in their neighborhood.

Each visit offers a variety of engaging experiences. Kids can take part in active games and movement-based activities that encourage healthy habits, enjoy nutritious snacks and learn important skills such as swim safety. Creative learning opportunities and team activities also help build confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging.

Throughout the year, the Y on the Fly vans participate in community events and visit neighborhoods where families may have limited access to recreation and youth programming. The vans have appeared at YMCA afterschool sites, neighborhood events and gatherings such as a recent community celebration at Calvary at New Life Church. Last month, the program visited Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) community center to connect with local families.

During the summer months, Y on the Fly expands its reach even further. The program will offer regular activities at three CMHA community centers twice each week, creating consistent opportunities for kids to stay active, learn new skills and enjoy positive social experiences throughout the summer.

By bringing programs directly into neighborhoods, Y on the Fly helps remove barriers to participation and strengthens connections within the community. It’s one more way the YMCA is working to ensure that every child has access to healthy activities, caring role models and opportunities to thrive.
