We Run This City

The YMCA of Greater Cleveland’s We Run This City (WRTC) program is gaining momentum this spring, both on the course and in the community, as it prepares for the upcoming Cleveland Marathon.

We’re proud to share that WRTC has been selected as an official charity partner of the Cleveland Marathon. This partnership creates an exciting opportunity to both elevate awareness of this life-changing program and generate critical funding to support its continued growth. It includes a special 20% registration discount for all YMCA members and friends. We encourage YMCA members who are participating in the marathon to consider making an additional gift to support WRTC. To register or become a fundraiser please access this link: Run for a Cause - Cleveland Marathon and use YGC26.

WRTC is a free youth marathon training program for students in grades 5–12, designed to promote physical health, goal setting and social connection. Over the course of the season, participants engage in structured training that includes cardio workouts, nutrition education and mentorship from volunteer coaches.

The program’s impact goes far beyond running. Participants build confidence, improve their physical and emotional well-being and develop meaningful connections with peers and mentors, all while working toward the shared goal of completing the Cleveland Marathon.

That progress was on full display in March, when WRTC runners participated in the St. Malachi Church Run. The event proved especially memorable, as participants helped break the Guinness World Record for the largest kilt race, with 3,345 runners crossing the start line in traditional attire.

A total of 84 WRTC runners from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, including students from Douglas MacAuthor girl's leadership academy, Clara E Westropp, New Tech East, Halle, Euclid Park, Joseph M Gallagher, Garfield, William Rainey Harper took part in the event. Most competed in the 2-mile race, while runners from Euclid Park and Halle stepped up to the 5-mile distance.

Among the standout performances, Marshawn Lashley of Euclid Park, who placed fifth in his age group in the 5-mile, an impressive achievement that reflects the dedication and progress of WRTC participants.

Moments like these highlight the power of the program, not just in preparing youth for race day, but in helping them realize their potential and celebrate their accomplishments along the way.

As we look ahead to the Cleveland Marathon, we remain committed to growing We Run This City. With additional funding and community support, the program has the potential to reach even more young people, strengthening their well-being and sense of belonging through fitness, mentorship and achievement.
