Children learning swim safety

At the YMCA of Greater Cleveland, we believe that access to life-saving skills like water safety should never be out of reach. Thanks to several recent grants, we are expanding our ability to provide free swim safety education to individuals and families across our community, many of whom would not otherwise have access to these critical programs.

Through funding provided by YMCA of the USA and the Ohio Alliance of YMCAs, our Y has secured multiple grants totaling more than $50,000 to support drowning prevention efforts. One YMCA of the USA grant of $15,000 focuses on youth, while an additional $21,000 grant from the Ohio Alliance supports both youth and adults. Two additional YMCA of the USA grants, $10,000 designated for Geauga County and another award of $8,700, further extend our reach, particularly among adults.

The grants are enabling the YMCA to more than double the number of youth and adults that we serve from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, local schools and community-based organizations.

These grants are all designed with a shared purpose: to reduce the risk of drowning by providing essential water safety education. Drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death, particularly among children, and access to swim instruction can be life-changing and life-saving.

Through these combined efforts, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland will ultimately provide free swim safety instruction to 510 individuals from across the region.

Participants are identified in partnership with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, local schools and community-based organizations. These partnerships help ensure we are reaching individuals and families who face barriers to access, whether financial, geographic or otherwise. By meeting people where they are, we are able to extend the Y’s mission and provide meaningful opportunities for safety, confidence and well-being.

While some of these grants were awarded through a competitive application process, others were offered directly to our Y in recognition of our strong track record in delivering high-quality, community-centered programming. In fact, one of the YMCA of the USA grants is a continuation of funding we have successfully secured in previous years, a testament to the impact and consistency of our work.

We began receiving these grants in February and March, and programming is now getting underway across our association. While we are still in the early stages of implementation, the long-term impact is clear: hundreds of individuals will gain the skills they need to stay safe in and around water, building confidence that extends far beyond the pool.

This work is a powerful example of how the YMCA lives its mission every day, strengthening community through programs that support spirit, mind and body while fostering a true sense of belonging.

If you’d like to support programs like this and help us continue expanding access to life-changing opportunities, please consider making a gift to our Annual Campaign. Together, we can ensure that every member of our community has the chance to learn, grow and thrive.
