As November arrives, it brings National Diabetes Awareness Month, a period for Northeastern Ohio residents to evaluate their vulnerability to prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. The stark reality is that adults
with diabetes tend to have shorter lifespans than those unaffected, and their medical expenses soar to more than double the costs others incur.
Presently, a staggering 98 million American adults, equating to more than one in three, are grappling with prediabetes, with eight out of ten remaining oblivious to their condition. Moreover, individuals with prediabetes face an elevated risk of not only developing type 2 diabetes but also other chronic ailments like heart disease and stroke.
Prediabetes is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels that fall short of a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. In the face of this growing health crisis, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland offers a lifeline through our CDC accredited Diabetes Prevention Program. This program is underpinned by robust research and is designed to assist overweight adults in achieving weight loss through healthier dietary choices and increased physical activity, thereby potentially staving off or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes.
This program is covered by Medicare part B.
For those seeking to take advantage of this invaluable resource, new classes in person and virtual class options starting early 2026. The good news is that it's not too late to enroll, and we welcome your participation!
