If you’re looking for inspiration to stay active, improve your well-being, or simply take on a new challenge, look no further than YMCA of Greater Cleveland member Tim Minnis. At 80 years old, Tim recently completed his final marathon in Columbus — the 52nd marathon of a remarkable running journey that began at age 49.
What started as a personal commitment to quit smoking and regain his health has transformed into a decades-long passion that has taken him across the U.S. and Canada, connected him with lifelong friends, and shaped his life in profound ways. Tim’s story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when perseverance meets community support — and of the spirit, mind and body strength that defines the Y experience.
What motivated you to participate in your first marathon?
Tim Minnis has participated in 52 marathons since starting his running career at age 49. He turned 80 years old this past October and participated in his last marathon in Columbus.
Tim was a former smoker and when he tried quitting, he gained 25 pounds. He starting swimming 1 mile a day and eventually started running on the treadmill. His motivation grew naturally from his journey to quit smoking and reclaim his health. Soon he started running outside and loved the open air and scenery. This new joy in running led him to try progressively longer races, first a 10K and then a half marathon. One year after his first 10K, he ran his first marathon. He loves the euphoric feeling at the finish line.
His marathons have inspired travel destinations over the years. Through his running career, Tim has seen so many places across the US and Canada. He sees the world through his running lens. His wife Marjorie, although not a runner herself, was always by his side cheering him on.
His most memorable marathon experiences have been participating in the Boston Marathon. He has participated 8 times. It was the best time of his life – the epitome of marathons and the qualifying standards are very high. After his first Boston marathon he was overcome with emotion, exuberance and joy.
What have you learned about yourself through your running career?
You can accomplish anything with mental strength.
What advice would you offer to a first-time marathoner?
He recommends the 16-week Boston training program. It’s best to take this on gradually.
How long have you been a Y member and how has the Y contributed to your health, wellness, and quality of life?
Tim has been a member of the Cleveland YMCA since 1990. He first joined the Cleveland Heights YMCA, then moved to the downtown YMCA on Prospect Ave and eventually to the Parker Hannifin Downtown YMCA. He has made so many friends, Tim shared “The Y is my community and has contributed to my quality of life in every way.” Although Tim lost his beloved wife Marjorie in 2022, he has relied on his running, his music, and his YMCA friends to keep his spirits up. Sometimes he is feeling unmotivated, but he gets himself to the Y and feels better every single time after his Y visits. It’s not just the exercise, it is the camaraderie with his fellow Y members and the sense of belonging at the Y.
What’s next, now that you’ve competed in your last marathon?
“Piano was a passion since I was a little kid. I started lessons at age 5 and have been playing ever since.” He will keep teaching piano lessons and keep running, although not competitively. The runs still bring him joy and he notes - burn more calories than swimming or walking. He’s also keeps up on his Y visits several times a week. Tim finds joy in his community and always brings energy and a smile to those around him.
The Y is grateful to be a part of Tim’s community!
