Get a “Helper’s High” — The Well-Being in Service
Acts of kindness do more than meet a need, they build connection, belonging and even better health. Research from the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Health shows that people who volunteer regularly experience lower stress, less depression and greater longevity. Giving time or resources triggers the release of endorphin, the so-called helper’s high, boosting emotional well-being and strengthening our sense of purpose. In short, when we lift others, we also lift ourselves.
As the season of gratitude approaches, it’s easy to focus on what we’re thankful for. But at the YMCA of Greater Cleveland, November reminds us that gratitude grows stronger when it’s shared. Each year, our branches embrace the spirit of giving through local drives that meet community needs and in doing so, they nurture the well-being of both the giver and the receiver.
Across Greater Cleveland, Y branches are collecting food, clothing, hygiene items, toys and other essentials to help neighbors in need. Here are a few examples from our 11 branches.
- At our French Creek Family YMCA, a new “Blessing Cart” will allow anyone to donate or take items year-round—creating a simple, dignified way to give and receive.
- The Garrettsville Family YMCA continues its tradition of housing the Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard, providing pantry access right inside the branch.
- North Royalton’s annual sock drive supports both Y-Haven residents and Lighthouse Ministries, while the Hillcrest Family YMCA is collecting toys for Olivia’s Dream and breakfast items for Ronald McDonald House.
- At West Shore, the drive supports St. Augustine Church’s community closet, and our West Park branch is gathering care items for Y-Haven residents overcoming homelessness and addiction
At the Y, we see that truth every day. The parent who volunteers at a youth program, the senior who knits hats for our drives, the member who stocks the Blessing Cart, each is practicing a form of wellness that goes beyond exercise or nutrition. They are strengthening their spirit, mind and body through empathy and connection.
This Thanksgiving, as families gather around tables filled with gratitude, our Y community will be living that gratitude out loud. Giving thanks by giving back transforms compassion into action, and action into belonging. It’s one more way the YMCA of Greater Cleveland is helping every person and every community thrives in spirit, mind and body.
