Greater Cleveland Y plans groundbreaking on two branches

(Cleveland, April 17, 2011) The Greater Cleveland Y will break ground on two new branch facilities in May.

Brad SellersGroundbreaking will take place May 2 for the Warrensville Heights Y branch to be located on Northfield Road, with an expected opening date in 2012.

Economic Development Director Bradley Sellers calls the location "the epicenter of the community” and says it's something the community needs.

“This partnership (between the city and the Greater Cleveland Y) is the proverbial win-win situation for everyone," says Sellers.

Sellers calls the project "the realization of a ten-year dream,” noting that the land was purchased 10 years ago.

Sellers retired from the NBA in 1993 and played overseas until 2000, when he joined the Warrensville Heights city administration.

“It will be a home away from home," said Sellers.

Mayor StefanicGroundbreaking for the North Royalton Y branch is set for May 6. North Royalton Mayor Robert Stefanik and his administration are partnering with the Y of Greater Cleveland to renovate the former Avalon Event Center on State Road and turn it into the new North Royalton Family YMCA.

“It has been the missing puzzle piece for North Royalton,” said Stefanik. “I’m really excited about it, as is everyone I talk to. It’s been one of my (personal) goals since I took office.”

The existing building will be retrofitted to house a new pool, gymnasium, workout areas and exercise rooms.
