East 36th Street Mural Project
How it Started

Michelangelo Lovelace, a Cleveland artist, worked with a group of men from Y-Haven, a transitional housing program for homeless men with substance abuse problems. During an eight-week residency program, Lovelace worked with the men to create paintings, some of them for the first time ever.
Other Facts
A second phase of the project added another partner, The Ohio State University Extension’s Urban Gardening Program. As owners of a community garden at the corner of East 36th Street and Cedar Avenue, the program agreed to have MIchelangelo Lovelace create a mural on a building adjacent to its site, incorporating the help of the men from Y-Haven.
The mural, titled “Born Again,” is representational of much of Lovelace’s work, depicting the Cleveland area in a folk-art style. His piece refers to various aspects of the surrounding Central Neighborhood and offers thought-provoking messages to the community.
