Campaign for Lorain County
The Healthy Communities Campaign raises needed funds to address the health, well-being and recreational needs of all Lorain County residents.
The campaign has already helped fund construction of a new full-service YMCA in Avon (French Creek at Avon), and a non-facility wellness center located within the Elyria YWCA.
Need for the Campaign
Lorain is among the Ohio Counties with the highest number of persons living in poverty. The Healthy Communities Campaign strategically situates several YMCA sites to serve both the densest and neediest communities.
Longevity researchers tell us that today’s younger generation will have shorter and less healthy lives than their parents for the first time in modern history.
Here are some important statistics to help you understand the importance of the Healthy Communities Campaign and why the YMCA of Greater Cleveland
is committed to helping:
- The five leading causes of death in Ohio – heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes – are all directly linked to unhealthy lifestyles.
- 27.9% of Lorain County adults smoke.
- 23.5% of Lorain County residents are obese.
- 40.8% of Lorain County residents are overweight.
YMCA programs address the health, well-being and recreation needs of Lorain County residents by making healthy living accessible to all.
Economic Impact
YMCAs are good economic neighbors in the communities they serve. The Healthy Communities Campaign will provide significant economic impact for the entirety of Lorain County.
The new French Creek YMCA at Avon brought 85 new jobs to the region. The new facility is anticipated to bring in approximately $250,000 to $300,000 in federal, state and locally generated tax revenues.
The French Creek YMCA has an operating budget of $2 million annually, including salaries and benefits of approximately $1 million.
